The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics is one of five Basic Science Departments in the College of Medicine at UIC.


Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. The current department was formed in 2003 from the merger of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Department of Molecular Genetics. We are located in the Molecular Biology Research Building on the University of Illinois College of Medicine campus on the near west side of Chicago, next to Little Italy and a few miles from the Loop and Lake Michigan. Our Department is home to a broad array of research programs which facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations: (1) cancer biology, (2) genetics & epigenetics, (3) gene regulation & genome maintenance, (4) genomics, computational biology & synthetic biology, (5) infection, inflammation & immunity, (6) mechanisms of neurological diseases, (7) protein engineering, drug design & structural biology, (8) signal transduction & cell cycle control, and (9) stem cells & developmental biology. Departmental Announcement

We are recruiting a tenure track Assistant Professor in computational biology and genomics (Closing Date: Oct. 15, 2023).
   UIC offers an intellectually exciting, collegial, and supportive environment with several NIH-funded training grants to support predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees. The department participates in several PhD programs including the umbrella Graduate Education in bioMedical Sciences (GEMS) PhD program that includes all basic science departments in the College of Medicine. Our faculty also regularly recruit PhD students from PhD programs in Bioinformatics.

Dr. Rehman has been appointed Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics effective July 1, 2022.
